on here anymore. We’re recording now. Just real quick. Yeah. You know on your door setup, it’s not very conducive to colorblind people. So that was my fear. When I got into the parking lot, I was thinking, man, you said teal door. I sure hope there’s other colors that are not just like that. Are you colorblind? I am colorblind. So I got up to the front. I’m looking at three doors. I’m like, well, it’s probably not the bakery. Like, well,
This one says it’s my competition, pontoon boats and something and maybe not in there. I had no idea. Luckily your wife was in the shop open the door. Oh, good. Okay. I guess I’m at the right place. We need to put a number on it or a little sticker. Yeah, we should have something residing in North Idaho. That yeah, we need on the outside door to. Okay.
Well, but I’m afraid we’re not going to last very long in this room. So if you’re if you’re back, you may have noticed the wall is now white. And that’s because we’ve moved again, because I just like moving furniture. I realize Dave does all the actual work that makes money and I just move shit around. That’s my job. I’m not helping with moving anything. It’s not fun. So yeah, we’re in a new space. Welcome. Today, we’ve got Ryan Holmes. What is your official title over there, by the way? I get to I get the opportunity to run the Marina Center.
Okay, on Blackwell Island. Okay, so cool. Yeah, that’s for hanging on ring group. Awesome. So we’re excited to have this conversation because there’s lots of questions here. They are one you guys are you guys are like all over town. I mean,
You have multiple marinas as well. Yeah, we have, we have the three marinas, three main marinas, and we have a nice service facility, actually a great service facility, a great sales facility. What we try to do is it’d a one -stop shop to make sure the boating experience is amazing. Yeah. Well, I think you guys got that figured out. Yeah. We just got our boat in the dry dock, which I’m pretty excited about. Yeah. And that’s, and that’s one of the things we’re going to be talking about is, I mean, brought right on here because there’s so many options that.
Ryan Holmes (01:53.678)
at Hagadon Marine from your from getting your boat taken care of and cleaned and you know, repaired fiberglass repair, having custom boats built, having the dry storage, the I mean, slips, sales, rentals, the boat club. Yep, service. We’re gonna talk about a lot of information. And these questions come up a lot because obviously people move here for, you know, the lakes. That’s a big part of it. That’s a big draw. So they want to know like, hey, how does this work? How do I get a boat slip? What do I do? So you’re the guy.
I remember and I’m repping today. Look at this. Oh, see it. I’m almost this is a firefighter shirt, too. Did you know that? I do. Yes. So it’s funny. I wear these all the time when I’m especially at the gym. I have a stack of these shirts still. Were they like your training shirts? These are what we wore on duty. Oh, OK. That’s like the under the turnout shirt. Yeah. Well, under the turnout, we don’t just wear turnouts all the time. That’s all I’ve ever seen. Anyway, this is my experience is unseen. So they were class B’s and stuff a lot of times and it’s hot. We’ll just wear T -shirts. But yeah, so I have so many of these.
Um, and, uh, it’s nice because as a fireman, you can wear that shirt like out in public and people like you, nobody hates you. CHP. You can’t wear a shirt. It’s like, Hey, I’m CHP. I a couple, I had a couple and they were just always in the closet training only. Yeah. You don’t wear that in public. Anyway, so Ryan, yeah. Your background before you came here, you moved here. How long ago? I moved here in October and then, uh, then purchase a house from you.
luckily came in come in contact with Dave and I got to be honest, there’s not a better person in the world other than my mom. Washington you have to buy it from my mom. But if you’re over here and I don’t know you got it you got to come to Dave and his group. But yes, I’ve been here for a little over a year now. Loving the lifestyle loving the difference. I really spent my whole entire career in in the automotive field. And it’s a that’s a tough competitive field and it’s just not about fun.
You know, it’s not about providing people with an opportunity to create memories. It’s not about, you know, making sure people have fun on their downtime. It’s really about necessity. And when you’re driving necessity, you know, you don’t create connections the same that you do when you create lifestyle. And that’s been the biggest eye opening change to me is A, meeting some amazing people over here, but also creating memories for people and their families and just an opportunity to do something a little bit different than maybe what they’re not even used to.
Ryan Holmes (04:16.628)
Cool. Let’s go. We look at how long were you in the auto industry? Oh man, I started pumping gas and cleaning windshields at 15. And then just kind of work my way up. I always came from the service side, never the never the sales side. So I actually never sold cars. I was believed in providing great service and the rest will take care of itself. And sometimes that timetable is a little bit longer when you’re focused on sales. You can drive sales, you know, but when you focus on service, you need to have confidence in your ability to change culture.
and implement change so that they can see that sales will sell something the first time, service will sell everything after that. So that’s been my biggest focus point, I guess, is creating a great service environment so that our customers can feel confident in any avenue that they choose to do business with us. And I know, so interesting, so you decided to come over here and try out boating. I did. And obviously it sounds like you made some great changes over there. Everybody seems to like you and talk positive about you.
Um, so, uh, Chris Craig, your sales manager, who I bought my boat from, Chris is awesome. Um, Chris made mention that when they were looking for a manager, they had all of these applicants and yours came in at like the 11th hour. It’s like a last minute decision. That correct? Well, you know, it was kind of interesting, you know, coming from automotive side and being over there in the, in Seattle, in, in Washington, it was a big lifestyle change, you know, to, to decide to come over here or not.
I didn’t go through Indeed, I didn’t go through any recruitment or anything like that. I actually found out that there was an opening through my brother for the GM job and my brother had moved over here about a year and a half ago before I did and he ended up buying a boat and said, hey, you know, there’s an opportunity and maybe you should take a look at it.
Ryan Holmes (06:04.91)
different, but I quickly decided that I’m not going to go work for Microsoft.
So I’m I better state of the skill set that I have which seems to be service in jazz transmissions finance and sales and Approach that and maybe a different Avenue, right? And so yeah, so I reached out I gave it called Craig and said hey, I heard you might have an opening and Craig said hey, you know if we’re interested we’re gonna run decided what we’re gonna do and Laurel be in contact and so I I think at the time I’d never been died out yet. I
You’ve never been here? No, my what? Never. And and so we were actually that that weekend before we had a family trip planned at Dover Bay. And it was my parents anniversary and got all the all the brothers and families together and went over there. And and I thought, well, maybe they’ll call.
you know, and that would sure save me a trip driving back over here. And so I so I brought interview clothes, you know, and got all that stuff. And, and I think it was the Thursday, Thursday, before we left, we left on Saturday, I get this personality test, and hey, take this personality test, let’s see if you’re fit. And, you know, I took that at the lake and, and just sitting there thinking, okay, maybe they’ll call me, they’ll call well, they didn’t. And so
I started driving back on Saturday, and I got reached out to and said, Hey, you know, can you come back for an interview on Tuesday? And I thought, Oh, great. Why work Tuesday? And I had Monday off. So I said, You know what, how can we make it Monday? And they said, Well, you know, you’re over in Seattle, we can do a phone interview. And I’m just anti that, you know, I think, if you really want something, and you want to see what’s out there, you got to put the effort into, you know, to doing it in the time so.
Ryan Holmes (07:48.974)
drove my family back and the next day I get up at three in the morning because for some reason I have the inability to calculate traffic time based in Seattle when you go you know about five miles takes you an hour so I took that same math and left the house at like 330 and got here at eight for a for an 11 a .m. interview and thought hmm all right once you get out of Seattle it’s a little different speed limiter above pretty much so so we did that and
And that was a great time. Got to got to meet the group. And I just couldn’t think highly of of Craig and Laura and Amy at the time. Highly enough of highly enough. OK, just want to make sure Craig hears this highly enough. Yeah, so it was it was a great experience and I got to see the property and it was really eye opening to me to kind of, you know, I was a boat owner before and, you know, kind of going through that process and seeing the facilities in different areas.
Is this really going to fit for me? I have an image of what I like to see and do, and this fit every aspect of that and more. So it’s the cleanest and best facility I have ever seen.
And that’s a real pride point for us and not just in the community and what we do, but also for our customers to come in and experience something that is different than what they might expect. And so that was awesome to see that and be a part of that. And so after that, I drove back home and, and I thought it was a good interview. And then we did another phone interview this time and I, I said I drive over, but they said, no phone’s fine. And I said, okay. And went through that process. And then, then the last one I came back over and that was my fourth time to ITO at the time.
time. Yeah, fourth, I think total third. And had a great time. But went through the process and accepted the job and then thought, Oh my gosh, we’re gonna move a family of three and my wife over here. And she got real. Yeah, I got real real quick. Luckily, I got the while the kids were in school. We waited till winter break to move. So I lived in the Coeur d ‘Alene in for three months.
Ryan Holmes (09:54.926)
And that was an experience and getting to see the hospitality side of things and how they care as the Haganon Corporation. And so it was great to see that and be a part of that and also be able to invest some time into the business without worrying about, you know, are the kids making friends? You know, how’s everything going, the move, all that stuff. So it was able to create a nice little time for me to get involved without having some of that fear of how everybody else is doing, I guess. So it was hard because then I would drive back to see him on
on Friday night and then leave back Sunday night to come here. And so we did that for about three months. And then, and then the process I got, I got your name from Craig and day or Craig and Chris and, and contacted Baller and the rest is history and just had a great experience. And, and we looked at what three, four or five houses. You guys are, you guys are pretty easy. It’s nice. Pretty easy. Yeah. Well, I know how it grind can be. Yeah. He just goes, ah, we like this one. Okay. Let’s go. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, but we got like, yeah, lucky with the neighborhood. Um, you know, we were in our, in our, uh, house in, in like taps their area for, since 2015. And I couldn’t tell you the, the neighbor’s name to my right. And I couldn’t tell you the neighbor’s name to my left. And I couldn’t tell you any of the kids. I couldn’t tell you anything. It was such a different, different, weird. How is it now that you’re over here? Well, first of all, I found that to be way more common over there. You know, I ran into a lot of people that we talked that, that just didn’t have that, you know, community atmosphere or vibe.
And so over here, we have some amazing friends that we met really quickly. And that’s great. I mean, the Real Housewives of Ivory Lane, a little bit there. And they and they go hang out and have fun and do a lot of cool stuff. And they come over like the other night. We were having my son had his first sleepover with his friends and and, you know, want to do Fortnite, want to do all these things. And then the neighbors came over and we just.
Started hanging out. It’s great. Just a really cool and very common. Very different. Yeah. Community is a huge thing up here. It is weird though. Your son had a sleepover because I can’t even, it seems like every time I saw my son, like, Hey, you want to have a buddy? Like when I was a kid, if you wanted to come over, I’d be like, Oh dude, can I have Seth over all the time? And then now I’m like, well, do you want to have your buddy over? And he’s like, Oh, Oh no, we’re playing video games. I’m like,
Ryan Holmes (12:14.126)
Well, why don’t you have him come over here? He goes, well, if he comes over, we can’t play video games. We got our own setup. It’s weird. What is happening? Yeah. Strange times. It was cool for him to be able to do that. And then all of a sudden, then we had these other couple of neighbor kids over and all of a sudden it looks like it’s a daddy daycare center out there. We got basketball going, we have the scooters going, we have the bicycles That’s the life right there. That’s the life. All those things happening. And it was real, it was neat to be a part of that and see them have fun like that. It’s nice kids. When had that opportunity.
Nice kids can be outside nowadays and do those things. Oh my gosh. Yeah So can you give like an overview of all of the facilities that you get that you guys manage? There are multiple I mean, I guess from the marine side, right? Yeah. Yeah, there’s a lot more than that. Yeah, I can only really speak to the yeah to the marine side it Yeah, so we have the quick launch facility which houses about 360 boats out of the water
We have three forklifts now, two designated for fiberglass and one designated specifically for pontoon. We can do up to about 100 plus launches a day. Can you explain what that is? Because people might not even realize what you talked about. No, the quick launch. The quick launch. Yeah. So basically it’s a membership that you pay for for a year and it houses your boat inside for the entirety of the year. And then you get an app on your phone that you request launches from and and you get about three launches every all the time that continually roll.
And then you ask when you want your, you say when you want your boat in the water, there’s a slot time and you drop it in there. And then when you come down, you park in our secure parking, walk down the dock and your boat’s right there. Ready to go. You’re in there now, right? Yeah, we’re in your boat already there. No, I gotta bring it down. Have you gotten the ass sweet? Uh, no, I haven’t done that yet. No, it’s, it’s freaking me working too much. David. What? That’s why our boats named the office. Everybody down there at the quick launch knows our boat. It comes off, has the office on the side.
Obviously we love watching the office, but we’ll go out there and work for the day if we can. If we don’t have to do showings. Yeah. Kids get kind of irritated sometimes. We’ve got a computer out there, but at least we’re able to be out in the sun. But yeah, it’s just this little, um, yeah, cool. Just a little happy in my life soon. It is the coolest thing you go on and you’re like, Hey, uh, Monday at 11 o ‘clock, I want my boat. You put it on there and like we show up and they got the boat launched. They’ll fuel it for you. If you put in notes and say, Hey, I want it fueled before it goes out. Um, that’s not great.
Ryan Holmes (14:33.966)
But, oh, that’s not free. That’s not free. Not necessarily included. Yeah. What about this free ice, right, Dave? There’s free ice, dude. Brian’s like, don’t get in trouble right now. There’s coupons for free ice. You have a few. There’s coupons for free ice. I’m like, dude, give me free ice. Brian’s like, don’t bring that up right now. Come on. Back him into a corner. Yeah, no, but it’s cool because you show up and your boat’s already launched. It’s ready to go. I mean, we literally walk out on the docks.
We don’t ever have to launch it. In fact, my trailer is probably rotting up in my in -laws property up in Rathrum right now. That’s awesome. Not that your trailer is rotting, but that’s awesome the way this thing works. Now, okay, now what about servicing them, you know, winterizing, right? Do you do that all there? So basically, and the other part about it is when you’re done with the boat, you’re done. Oftentimes when you’re done on the water, you want to go home.
You don’t want to load it back up on your trailer. You don’t want to back it back into your driveway. You don’t want to do any of that thing. Any of those things and none of it is it you’ll need to do. So we parked the boat, clean it, get it ready for the next time we take it out and put it back in the, in the launch. So we’re in the, in the dry stack. If you were the person that jacks up the boat launch every single year and it takes you five attempts to back in this might be, this is, this is a better program for you. Well, I can tell you, you know, boating, I voted on Lake Washington before.
And that’s where we voted mostly. And we didn’t have a wet slip or anything like that. There was no dry stack options available. And if they were over there, it just wasn’t even remotely affordable. And I’ll tell you, I’m not very good at backing the trailer up. And I would get to the boat launch super early in the morning just to back it up without having an audience. No pressure. Just the worst. And then I’d go and sit on the boat, wait for the fam to get there. And it was enjoyable at that moment. But it…
but we’re designed to take the stress out of boating. Boating should be enjoyable, it should be relaxing, it should be fun, it should be worry free, and that’s what we’re all about. So anytime we can remove a stress point from that, that’s what we wanna do. It’s such a cool idea. Are there more plans for another one or anywhere else? I think if you were to talk, Craig is a visionary, and Craig Bronzini, he’s our president of the Marine Division.
Ryan Holmes (16:44.142)
And that guy, I’m learning so much from him and his ability to plan and strategic placement of buildings and why and all of those things. So when you say other plans, yeah, we have a 10 -year plan, we have a 15 -year plan, and all of those are really, really neat and big. But if we don’t, we need to focus on what we have now, build what we have, do a great job, because it is still new. It’s three years. This will be the third year of it. And so for us, we want to focus and make sure that we…
Perfect it and then on and replicate it if we can. Yeah, cuz I know I mean there’s a lot of pressure, you know To get boat slips. There’s a lot of people that are trying to get them. So that helps alleviate some of that pressure Yeah, it does and it’s nice and and you have the Parking secure parking that you’re able to go to there’s a clubhouse there that you’re able to do last year one of our members had their 40th wedding anniversary and
They rented the or had the clubhouse available and we threw them a party for their 40th anniversary and it was a real cool event around the water overlooks everything and just a great scenic view and even if some of the best times on.
Ryan Holmes (17:52.334)
using anything, either swimming, anchored swimming or my favorite thing to do. Yeah. Hang out. It’s different. I finally got an anchor last year. I was tired of floating and I learned on our last podcast that I can actually drink an alcoholic beverage while I’m operating. Oh, as long as I’m under the limit. Not advocating that. Not advocating my goodness. Yeah. And I don’t think a lot. I don’t drink a lot. I’m just saying it’s an option. I don’t have to hide it. Although you probably still get pulled over and then you’re able to. Yeah. Yeah. It’s a.
one of those things where you get too much of it out there and it might not be the best thing. So yeah, one of the things that we really specialize in is trying to make sure that everybody in the family is comfortable driving the boat. And I know for me going back to Lake Washington and not just the trailer, but you know, I didn’t know that I had a terrible buying experience when I bought my boat until I understood what we do for our customers on that buying experience. And then also we do a women making waves that we want everybody to feel comfortable operating a boat because our business depends on it.
you know, we want to make sure that they have the best on water experience possible. And that’s why our service departments open seven days a week during the summer to make sure that if they’re and we’re all located on the water, you don’t have to tow it out. We’ll come to you. We’ll pick it up. The women making waves. Do you guys partner with a Cooney County sheriff on that in any way? Cause I know they’re trying to do some stuff like that too. No, but I can tell you that ours fills up instantly. I mean, when we have a, we have one of those classes going on and, and.
And we, it’s not just a 15 minute here. Here’s a, here’s a YouTube video and this should tell you how to do it. We go out on the boat. We go out on the boat that they own. We go out on the boat that they’re thinking about purchasing. Um, we show them how to tie knots. Um, we do all of that stuff and let them dock the boat with us. And the beautiful thing is they’re not docking. Nobody’s docking your boat. So as errors happen and, and, uh, and they do occasionally, then we fix them and move on, but it doesn’t have to impact your day on the water. I think that’s good for wives. Cause I think wives are like,
kids, my wife will not. Oh yeah. Every time we’re coming in, I’m like, Hey, do you want to dock it? She’s like, no, next time. Oh man. Next time. But she keeps talking about that glass. I’m like, maybe it’s just me. I’m just too much pressure. It is. You cannot teach your spouse anything. You have to like switch spouses for that. That is the one thing that you’re allowed to switch spouses for. In my opinion. I think one of my favorite shirts is, uh, forgive me for what I forgive me for what I said while docking the boat. For people.
Ryan Holmes (20:14.734)
I’ve seen people too like that’s another cool thing about the quick launch when you’re pulling it in they have they have little minions I call them You know a bunch of a bunch of teenagers that are out there and they got great customer service to do a great job I mean, they’re the ones that are launching your boat, but they’ll meet you like as you’re pulling in if you’re having trouble talking They’ll grab you pull you right in. Yep, tie off your boat everything else. I mean they they do a great job Yeah, we really try to make it as easy and simple as possible. That is our goal What about servicing the boat where like you guys will do it right there? Yeah. Yeah, so we’re doing we’re doing spring activation now
What does that involve? Because my boat was winterized. Do I actually need to do anything to summarize it or do you just fire it up? Well, I mean, if you want to sit at the dock all day and not go anywhere, you might want to think about summarizing it. Tell me more. Tell me more about this. I’m fine sitting at the dock. It’s like I told you that’s what I like to do. But so the whole idea of the winterization is to protect the engine. You know, you got water in there and we have freezing temperatures and we just don’t want there to be any catastrophic impacts to the engine or any of the accessories that hold water or anything like that.
Summarizing it is just making sure that we get it back plugged up floats. Everything’s working operating And then we just kind of do a quick lake test on them most of the time or we’ll run them on a hose make sure everything’s going through operating temperature and then we just Make sure you have a great experience. Oh gotcha. Okay. Yeah, so it’s a it’s a fairly easy process. Okay, perfect So you do also so for people that maybe they’re moving up here. They’re not sure what type of boat they want to buy You know, like I was I was lucky we went to the boat show which boat show is
January? February. Yeah, it has been. So yeah, February. And that was a cool experience. We bought ours at the boat show. Nice. And that was a good time for us to go and actually check it out. But I was really against tritones. I was like, I want like the sexy fiberglass like the thing he has that he does not operate. I used to have a tritone just for the record, by the way. Well, I miss it. I loved it because now we have, you know, everybody calls it a party barge. But ultimately, like, it’s amazing to go out there. Luckily, we picked right.
but to go out there with a family and eat dinner and just hang out there and just be this floating, just, I mean, just everybody relaxes and kids can swim and jump off and it’s a good time. But for people that don’t know what they want to buy, you guys now have a boat club that came out, right? Yep. We just started that this month and we did a lot of research before unrolling it and we looked at different avenues and different companies. There’s a lot of companies that do things like that, but Craig’s vision and our execution, we believe that we can do it better than, than anybody.
Ryan Holmes (22:38.018)
We want to put premium boats, not leftovers or that type of thing in there. And we want to have each category that we offer. So we’re going to have a pontoon. We’re going to have a great runabout, which is more of like your cobalt. And then we’re going to have a wakeboat, like an Axis or Malibu in there, so that you can experience what you want before you buy, or B, as you’re moving into the area and you’re saying, well, I think my kids are going to want to wake surf, but I want to take this boat out. And I want to take my wife to dinner over.
Beverly’s or whatever the case is, you have options to be able to accommodate the ride you want for that day. Because every boat will ride a little bit differently and do a little bit different and the functionality of them are different. So we have an initiation fee that you pay to join the club. And that’s a one time. And then if you decide that over the next year or two years or six months or whatever period of time it is that, you know what, I think I want to own my own boat instead of being a part of the club. Then we take that initiation fee and we roll it into your discount and or down payment on your.
on your next on the boat that you decide to purchase. That’s fantastic. Yeah. The thing about the boat club too is that it really takes us some of the worry out for it for our guests. Uh, it’s just a four 95 a month and it covers insurance. It covers storage. It covers repair. It covers maintenance. So you kind of have your loose of registration stickers, everything. How many times can you take it out in a month? You can take it out unlimited as long as availability. We’re running it the same way as we do the quick launch. So you’ll have three reservations that are rolling at any given time. As you use one, you’ll pick up.
one. However, if you’re saying, you know what, let’s see if a boat’s available, I’m gonna just take it out and it’s one and it is you can go out right away. So unlimited access. Dude, that’s way cheaper than owning a boat. You know, it can be buying. Well, it’s nice because you type you type a few thousand dollars to be part of it. Yeah. And then but you guys give that back. How if I were to sign up for the boat? What is it called? The boat launch boat club. If I were to sign up for that today and pay that initiation fee, when can I?
When, if I decide next month that I want to go buy a boat is, okay. No, no criteria on the, there’s no, like I have to be part of it for a year or anything else. I can just take that. If I take out an access Malibu and I like it, I can turn around and do it right away. And how much, I mean, so when you talk about nice boats, I mean, they have some really nice boats at Hagadah Marine. So, and I know that when you go rent boats, a lot of times it is the lower end, you know, pontoon or whatever else. Yeah. It’s still a good brand, but it’s just more of an entry level in that brand.
Ryan Holmes (25:03.264)
You know, we’ve kind of talked a lot of people that are moving to the area that are exactly what you said unsure of what they want You know, they may have grown up in in more of a Florida region or somewhere that’s Heavily one way on a boat where like Center console for instance a center console boat really isn’t that popular up here But it’s very popular down in Florida So we don’t want somebody to be pigeonholed into a boat that they’re not gonna want on the same water type that we have So we want to give them options to decide what it is that they want to have them have a great experience on on the boat So the brands are always gonna be
brands whether it be Barletta, Harris, Cobalt, Access Malibu, Regal, I mean those are the brands that we’re gonna carry and we’re gonna keep in that in that club and then we’re gonna do no more than nine members per boat so that we get the availability for everybody to have access to it. A lot of them are around the 12 mark and then we have boats that are fit for this lake so instead of seeing a boat that is you know a nice
maybe a 19 foot boat that you want to take your family out on. It’s probably not going to do as well as what we would want you to have on the lake. And so we’re providing the lake to match the quality. Okay. Yes. Or the quality of the boat to match the lake. Nice. That’s a cool program. I like that. Yeah. So the only thing you’re responsible for outside is the monthly is, is the gas. So, you know, you use it and then you don’t have to gas it. We’ll do that for you. It’s just a matter of how much you use, you pay to replace, you know, different on a rental car for the aspect of gas. Wow.
Yeah, not bad. 500 bucks a month and that’s pretty cool. Less than 500 a month. Less. We don’t need to charge tax on it. Oh really? It’s $495. Oh, welcome to Idaho. California they charge tax and then a resort fee and then a boat. If I factor in what I spent on a boat, like it would have been cheaper. Well, what I like to do that. What I like about, I mean, obviously the initiation fee kind of covers it, you know, and that’s the motivation to buy a boat. But I mean, if you ever walk away, at least you don’t have a boat you got to deal with or anything else like that. Right.
So I’m trying to sell a used boat and that’s no good. Yeah. And you can stay a part of the program. You only have one initiation fee. You can stay a part of the program for as long as you want. Yep. Five years, 10 years, 20 years, however long it is that you want to. That’s a good option for some people. And it’s a good option for people that are here and cannot find a boat slip. Oh yeah. Right. There you go. But it’s also a good option for, you know, people that are moving in, you know, that, that don’t maybe have.
Ryan Holmes (27:20.366)
space to store a boat or maybe don’t have the resources but really want to be a part of what Coeur d ‘Alene is really all about. Yeah. You know and to to make it affordable and to be out on the water and create memories and to have that time with your family that you’re never going to get back. You know I really feel like it’s a like it’s a priceless priceless thing and to have secure parking be a part of the quick launch clubhouse and everything else because we’re incorporating everything in that already. So it’s the same.
uh, dock hands that help tie off the boat are going to be the same ones helping you. And they’re amazing kids that do a great job. And we just have a lot of people that, that really care. And I think that’s really what separates us more. And when, uh, we looked like Craig and, and how it funnels down, we want to have premium boats because we want them to have a great experience because if they don’t have a great experience, they’re not going to continue to be on the water. And if you’re not going to be on the water, then we’re not going to be continued to.
have an opportunity to be a part of their life. So for us, it’s a trickle effect. It’s wherever you are in your financial life and as you grow or change or whatever, we want to still be able to experience the lake. So that’s really what this program is about is bringing more people to experience the lake.
Ryan Holmes (28:36.974)
Do you know, so the do you know what the wait list is for the slip in one of the marinas at right now? It depends on this size of the boat. Okay. And possibly what maybe what marina that they’re at. So I think that the wait list at Boardwalk right now is and this isn’t my realm. So if I’m speaking out of turn, okay, I think it’s Boardwalks people knows at the resort. Yeah, the Boardwalk one is at the resort right downtown. And I want to say that’s about a seven year waiting list is what I.
year year. Yeah. Yeah. That’s crazy. That’s crazy. And then you guys have Silver Beach, right? That’s a silver beach is the one next to the golf course. So we have that one as well. And then we have Blackwell Island, which is the one where quick launches at and also the Marina in front of the ship. Now, if you’re at the slips there at Blackwell, yeah. Can you also have Hagedome Marine do your service for it and went through station and stuff like that?
Oh, yeah, you actually don’t have to have a slip to do that. Oh, yeah. So we we do. I mean, we service quite a few boats and not all of them are in our slips. Not all of them are on our lake. I mean, we go as far as Moses Lake. Well, actually, we’ve gone as far as Seattle to pick up a boat and service it and do do those things. And yeah, priest over. So definitely all the Idaho lakes. Oh, yeah. I don’t know why you would live in Seattle.
Well, seems odd. All the way over here, yeah. You know, it depends on, you know, we have a lot of people that have vacation homes over here. Right. That said, hey, you know what, I really want to do something special on this day over in this, this lake. Could you help me facilitate the boat over there? And yeah, absolutely. We’ll do it. Wow. Yeah. If we’re not helping people create memories, we’re not doing our job. Now you guys also make boats. Yeah.
which I got to see the other day for the first time. Yeah, I didn’t know this. Yeah, they have core custom, right? Yep. Core Custom is our brand that we manufacture on the island. So what tell us about that? Those are wood boats, right? They’re wood boats. Yep. And we do heavy restoration to I mean, our guys in the wood shop are incredible. The amount of care that they put into it and they’re truly construction artists.
Ryan Holmes (30:51.31)
in how they form and bend and shape wood into cold molding wood boats. You know, I mean, we use the finest quality of everything that we find. There’s not a better person than Jim when it comes to understanding and wood boats and how they can get better life, how they can do less in restoration. But, you know, if you have like, I think we’re doing a 54 Chris craft rebuild right now. I mean, we just done so much restoration work.
And then we’ll build, we’ll build some, some boats as well. So what, what kind of, what kind of wood is used? Is it mahogany? Do you know what type of wood it is? I don’t know what type of wood is. I don’t even want to make some for later. No, no, it’s not. You’re not picking up a bill, the boat from Ikea. No, I was in there. I mean, it’s, it’s crazy when you see like how they like the been bent and shaped and everything else. And I mean, it’s like seamless. That’s cool. It’s crazy. And they’re pretty heavy too. Right? Oh yeah.
Yeah, they can they can be really heavy and one of the new processes or I shouldn’t say new but new to me anyway is is the cold molding process of a wood boat and how it sucks the epoxy into fill the gaps and then it lays over again and it’s basically like building the hole four times and how it’s cold molded shaped and formed to fit so that you get less gaps in the wood as you see the planking of the wood so it’s it’s pretty pretty cool deal. Wow. Yeah if anybody ever wants to stop by and get a tour let me know. Yeah. Happy to get in. That’s right there at Blackwell. It’s yeah right there at Blackwall.
Oh, I know I got to see yesterday. It was freaking cool. Hi yesterday. A couple days ago. Dang. I’m jealous. Thanks for the invite. I didn’t even know. That’s fine. I had a guy in town. He’s like, I’m interested in a boat. Oh, that’s right. Let me go introduce you to somebody. This is cool. That’s right. Um, yeah, no, that’s a, it is kind of neat because like I said, we go down there and obviously even like the clubhouse for the quick launch. I mean, you can go get drinks there. You can get sandwiches made. You got, you know, it’s like a full little convenience store. Yep. Coffee, Advil.
Ice cream. We have ice cream down at the pro shop. Oh yeah. Yeah. It’s good. Kids, kids always want ice cream on the boat. So that’s a big deal. Yeah. It does seem to be a big deal. You guys, uh, hiring any teenagers? I got a teenager that needs a job. Yeah. Comes down. Sweet job, right? We need to get our boys over there to apply. Yeah. That’s totally, how would not that be the best summer job ever as a teenager? Yeah. I couldn’t think of a better one. You have to keep your shirt on cause my son likes to run around with his shirt off right now.
Ryan Holmes (33:17.838)
We are requiring struts on. Yeah. He’s like, he’s like, he’s like, look at me. Really? He’s got his mom’s jeans. And I’m like, dude, I got chubby jeans. I don’t know what else to tell you. Like you got mom’s jeans and then he works out all the time now and he’s constantly like flexing and he’s like, dad, look at my vein in here. Look at this. And I’m like, I will level you still hurt you boy. Yes. I will level you. We were arm wrestling the other day and he’s, he’s like, when do you think I’ll beat you? I’m like, never.
It’s like I’ll break your arm off before you can be literally die before that but he’s getting He’s getting strong just benched 185 four times the other day. It’s the way 145 pounds Wow, and I’m like and so when I arm wrestle Mike it’s not like it’s just a clean drop now and I’m like Dang, so I’m gonna have to start tapering X when he gets too close Then I got out like dodge it or I gotta start working out more. You got tennis elbow
Yeah, exactly. Right. I’m old. Let’s go left handed. Excuse me. Popping Advil. Yeah. So anyways, I just want to make sure if he comes down there to get a job that you’re going to make sure he wears his shirt. Cause yeah, yeah, yeah. We’ll make sure he wears a shirt. It’s kind of, it’s kind of important to us. I think Hudson would probably do the same type of thing. Oh, a hundred percent. Yeah. 100 % run around with their shirts off. Get out of here too. Well, I got wet. I had to take it off. Sorry. Uh -huh. Yeah. It fell in. Sure. That’s awesome. So then, and then,
How many slips do you guys have at Hagadon, not just in the quick launch, but outside slips? I want to say around 1300. Total between all the marinas? Between all the marinas, yeah. Oh, dang. I you meant just down there. Maybe 900. Again, that’s not my… I’ve been really so focused on just getting the island right and really working with the team and developing just great people to do a great job and work hard to increase the experience of every guest. How many employees do you guys have down there?
Like at the island. I want to say it fluctuates during winter. It’s probably closer to the 75 to 100 and in summer it’s probably closer to 200. Oh wow. Okay. Yeah. Now you guys throw, obviously I saw the barge out there the other day. I mean you guys do all the fireworks shows and everything else out of there. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We, uh, we get it ready to go. Are there any of those 12 inch shells hanging around?
Ryan Holmes (35:32.142)
They don’t let us have I think they’re afraid of that. I see a picture of Craig every year and he’s got one. It’s like this big and he’s holding it up and he’s writes his name on it. But it’s huge. I mean, the firework is this big. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I’ll tell you what, when it comes in and I can’t speak highly enough about Craig, I mean, not just from who he’s been to me since I’ve since I’ve moved, but but who he is as as a visionary and who and who he cares about, which is everyone. He’s been huge.
You know, huge in that regard. I mean, he cares. He wants it to be an amazing experience for everybody all the time. And he drives us that way to do that. Drives us to deliver. You know how I know that guy’s sincere? Did I ever tell you about how I met Craig Rosini? No. So we were at, he likes to go to Quinn’s Hot Springs over in Montana. And we were over there and we had just bought our boat. And, you know, we’re over there and he’s got his hat on and his glasses. I don’t if he just knows people or maybe Craig’s a celebrity. But I’m over there and we didn’t know Craig at all or anything about him. And…
we’re talking to somebody else about, Oh, we just bought this boat or whatever. We’re just hanging out. And then they kind of leave and he comes over. He’s like, Hey, he’s like, uh, where’d you buy your boat? Like, Oh, over at Haganom Marine. Super cool. We start talking about it. And he’s like scrolling through his phone. He’s like, yeah, he goes, is that it? And he pulls up a picture of our boat at the boat show with his dog on it. I’m like, what the f… Where’s your dog on my boat? Who are you? But so it was funny, you know, we met him out there and we actually did a new year’s with him this year.
We went out and we rented out a bunch of places at a Clint’s hot spring. Craig came, Chris Craig came. Um, those guys gotta get their names figured out. That’s Chris Craig and Craig. But anyways, what made me realize how sincere that guy was is, you know, he didn’t know me from anything and we went out there and we met him and we’re like, wow, this, this guy has some impact in the community, right? He does a lot of stuff and we had a good time hanging out with him. And, uh, I was like, well, that’s cool. Like I’ll never see that guy again.
And then next thing you know, he’s just shooting me just nice messages on, on Facebook, like, Hey, I hope you guys had a good time and enjoying the boat and just kind of checking that’s cool. And I was like, what? Like that’s odd when you have somebody that’s at that level at that caliber that has no so many people and everything else. And then he’s like, literally, I mean, taking time out of his day to like check in on me, see our boat experience was I’m like, man, that is so cool. And he’s always been like that. He’s just that type of person. It’s not just me. Like he is, he’s that type of guy.
Ryan Holmes (37:54.83)
that actually wants to see if you’re having a good time and having a good experience with it. Well, you know, I mean, I believe he’s the definition of care. You know, I mean, when you think about, you know, from our motto is we want we want complete ownership satisfaction, you know, from the time you decide to purchase the boat to the servicing of the boat to the storage of the boat to the time that you decide to trade the boat in and get something different. We want to be there for every avenue of providing great service. And you can’t provide great service unless you care.
you know, and that’s something that he has done a great job of stealing. And now it’s up to us to continue that and preach that and live it and breathe it. So it’s been a good, good experience in that regard. It is a really, you’re going to love it this year. I can’t wait. Yeah, I’m excited. Yeah, we had a, we had a slip on kind of over in Bennett Bay last year that we leased from a homeowner there and it was cool, but our boat got beat up pretty bad because it’s just very exposed right there to the wake. So.
excited to not be in that situation. And we moved and the quick launch is way closer to our new house than that location. So I think that’ll be a good jump for us. That’s great. Yeah, I’m excited for you. And my goal, my goal is to like Dave and I’ll go out at the same time. I’m gonna go chill on his boat. He can take my boat and drive that shit all day. Absolutely go wake up on your boat. I love it. That’s a Craig wakes up in the winter. I’m
They invited me out one time this year and I was so mad because it was like snowing and it was like, that’s pretty cool. I know it was really cool. Um, so people that want to buy a boat, you guys obviously do sales and everything else. Yep. I want to know about like what brands you get and then what boats are expensive. Break out another thousand. Isn’t that what it is? Yeah. Some said that. Um, yeah. But I mean, if, if people are looking into boats, what, what boat brands do you carry? And then what, um, what are typical price ranges for things like that for people? I know the sky’s the limit.
But where do things like that typically start? So we actually have, well, so we’ll start with Axis, um, Axis Malibu, and then we have Cobalt. And then we have a Chris craft, regal, cruiser yachts, core customs, our letter and Harris. And I think that that’s all of them. And so we should have a boat. In fact, we do have a boat that will fit every one of your needs of whatever stage you are in your life with, whether it’s be with kids, I want to two versus kids that want to wake, sir, versus, you know, you just want to go out.
Ryan Holmes (40:15.278)
And now they’re starting to come out with like a cobalt 33 surf. So like for the grandparents or, you know, that gets out of the house that want the cruiser boat to be able to go on the lake and have a great time with, but you know, they see the grandkids maybe once every month or a couple of times a month and they still want the ability to surf. There’s a 33 foot cobalt that’ll, that’ll serve you now. Wow. And that thing, that package is an amazing layout. And so.
I think there’s a lot of confusion too with the big boats is understanding like it might be harder to drive, but I’ll tell you what the bigger boats are easier to drive. We equipped just about I think everything that we have in that bigger section with a joystick and it is literally like video game. That’s cheating. It is cheating. We had one of those in our fire boat, man. We’d sit down and we’re like, what is this? You go sideways. It was like the Wonka vision.
You know, you can go all diagonal and all over the place. Yeah, that’s cheating. It is cheating and it’s awesome. Yeah. No, I’d be all over that. But I’d rather cheat. Yeah. Than put that thing up on the dock. Oh, 100%. I’m telling you, one point we’re going to be like site six up here and have a seat. We’re going to go sit out there with beers and lawn chairs and we’re going to heckle people that can’t launch the boats on the. So then you guys sell those and then you guys do in -house financing and stuff too? No, but we do work with the Bound.
uh, seven to 10 different banks that cater to different, uh, spectrums of either credit or down payment or collateral. Uh, and we do a really good job in, in that regard. So, um, so they don’t have to necessarily go to somebody else. They can handle it all. Oh Yeah. We, it’s, it’s easiest to do it in house, um, than anywhere else. So, and then, um, like my boat, we’re talking, oh, we’re not going to, we always talk about it. Like, well, what if we ever trade in? So can we, do you guys still use it? You said you still use boats too? Yep. Yep. We do a lot of.
we do a lot in the pre -owned area and the pre -owned market. So we also do consignment. So if you know, you’re unsure, but you want to list it with us, but maybe it wanted to do something different and we’ll do consignment as well. And, and we’ll get the word out about it. So we do quite a bit in the, in the pre -owned market because we are selling new boats. They don’t know what to do with them. So we take them in, we recondition them. We do a compression check on every used boat we have, uh, because ours and odometer are different. Yeah.
Ryan Holmes (42:32.654)
And so we want to make sure that anything that we’re selling, we can put our name behind it because we don’t just have a name. You know, we have I like to think of community and we got to represent that community and and we need to do everything possible to make sure that the Hagan on name is just respected and and that you get what you deserve. And and that’s really important to us. So when you buy a boat from us, whether it’s new or pre -owned or when you service with us, you know, we have a responsibility to.
to the hang it on to make sure that that’s a great experience for the consumer. Nice. What’s like, okay, so price range, low end to high end. What would he, if someone came in, what’s the lowest end new boat? I would say probably about equipped, maybe 30, 39. But that might not be the boat that you want. That’s going to get you on the water. You know, it’s not maybe going to be exactly what you want, depending on every family and lifestyle and change. So,
say you can get one for about $39 .99 and then you could spend, we have a $50 GLS that’s coming out which is a cruiser yacht. It’s got the swim platforms, it’s very expensive. It’s got the swim platforms that go down $50. And what that’ll do is it’ll create, I think it’s a 13 by 20 swim deck with the swim platform down. A 13 by 20? 13 by 20 swim deck. Alright, what’s the price on this one? Well, you know.
when you ask it can range a little bit on options, but I would say a nicely equipped. You’re probably at a 2 .3, 4 .3 thousand. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 2 .3 thousand. Yeah. I’ve heard it said that. Holy crap. Yeah. And so are we allowed to talk about Mark Wahlberg’s boat? Nah, no darn it. All right. His little fishing boat. It’s aluminum. No big deal. Sure. That’s nicer. I saw him out and I saw him out in beauty Bay last year.
It is amazing. Like how many people vacation up here just to come up and be on the water. Yeah. I think it’s different. You know, we have Ryan Miller on here. He was a Kootenai County. He’s in charge of all the waterways and everything else. And, uh, you know, he, he obviously, they know all the celebrities that are on the water up here. Cause they always stop them. But, uh, you know, he, um, he was talking about how this is the busiest waterway, inland waterway and all of Idaho.
Ryan Holmes (44:56.174)
And I think it’s, he said the second busiest in the country, right? was something like that. Havasu is the only one that’s busier. So it was a shocking. Yeah, it was. And what I find, I mean, obviously if you’re coming up here and you’re boating, you know, it seems like the, the north side of the lake is typically where most of the traffic is. I mean, within view of the resort, right? Yeah. There’s a lot, but Lake Coeur ‘Alene, how many miles long is Lake Coeur 38 miles or something? Yeah, something like that. It’s, it’s a long lake and there’s so many coves and so many places that you can go that,
I mean, if you really want a day away, one of my favorite things to do is we head down towards Harrison, which Harrison I’ll stop. It’s like, Oh yeah. A little bit of a crap shoot out there, but they actually have, uh, they have a cool Maori state park. It’s a, have you been down there? No, I haven’t been down there yet. Oh my gosh, dude. That was amazing. Did you camp there? Yeah. So it’s a boat in only campground. So there’s no, there’s no roads into it that are accessible. I mean, you know, obviously they got, you know, trails in there. They got to, you know, come in and maintain, but.
You can’t drive in there. So it’s boat in only they got like five or six docks there and you pull up there’s a no wake zone so you can swim out there and you can see Harrison you can see you know north onto the lake but it is amazing and every time I’ve been there there’s nobody there. Hopefully not seriously listening to this goes there now but I’m telling you I’ve heard of it and I wanted to go right. We just didn’t make happen. There’s something about the impracticality of staying overnight on the boat like a lot of people don’t do that.
But it’s funny, we went and camped there and we just said, I was like, you know what? It’s great. I got so much work going on. Let’s just go there for dinner. We’ll stay the night and we’ll come back early in the morning. We did. We went there and we were just there for the night. There was nobody. They got nice little campground setups everywhere. Um, full moon. It was beautiful. I actually slept on the boat. I liked the motion. So except for the freaking, the moon was like this light right now. My face all night. But yeah, we slept there all night and uh, then we just cruised back. It took us about 30 minutes to get back.
Um, and, uh, we left at like seven in the morning. It’s just like a nice morning drive. It’s a good reset. You know what we need to do this summer? Cause our day’s getting crazy busy in the summer. And then I just like, I never get that reset. It was, it was nice and nobody really comes there. I mean, it’s crazy anymore. Well, that’s the one thing I think that’s so neat about this lake. And one of the things that I would almost deem as being special is, you know, if you want to be around people, you can, if you want to be alone, you can.
Ryan Holmes (47:15.822)
If you want to see great housing and an amazing architect and all that, then you can. If you want to see the woods, you can. If you want to see the mountains, you can. If you want to swim and be by yourself, I mean, this lake offers everything. And that’s something that is unique to me because generally speaking, you have one or the other. You have a high traffic. I would say Lake, you know, Lake Washington. You’re not going to find a lot of, you’re going to see Mount Rainier, but you’re going to…
kind of be around housing the whole time, not a lot of trees and that type of stuff. Or you can go out to like Alter Lake and you’ll see no housing and all trees. And so, you know, the ability that the variety that this like offers is pretty, pretty neat. I think it’s pretty special. I think it’s a, yeah, it’s, it’s a good community. And I like the fact that you can actually go on a lake and people are, people are somewhat safe up here. Yeah. Like I feel like people haven’t had a little bad experience, a little more normalized to the boating experience just because it’s kind of a lifestyle out here.
Whereas when I go to Havasu, it’s like everybody’s coming there from Southern California. It’s not a lifestyle. They’re out there for the weekend to get as much as they can go in. And then you got these tunnel holes going a hundred miles an hour and it’s just freaking crazy. Well, and that’s the nice thing about the boat club too is because we understand that this is probably going to be a more inexperienced boater. And so we are going to do it like we do if you buy a boat from us and we’re going to set you up with a delivery captain to go over each boat and how it drives, how it operates, the features that it offers so that you’re not just, Oh, signed up.
I get in the boat. Now what do I do? Yeah. So we want to take it that step further and do a really nice education of the boat over laws. Um, and just all of those things. So it’s really important training class driving years. I’m good. No, I got it. We should get the boys out there to drive yours. Mine’s easy to drive. Yeah. Mine’s pretty easy to drive. If we want to wake surf that’s in tandem, you have my shoulders. They need to, I definitely need the boys. Definitely try that. Yeah. I thought maybe I would just hug your back. Please. I can go on the shoulders.
Either way. Yeah. I’m down with whatever. Yeah. Yeah. No, that’d be good. The boy, the boys need to learn how and the, I’m the wife. She did drive when my son broke his arm. She drove the boat. Yeah. She did a great job. I had to sit in the while you were wait, sir. No, after he broke his arm. Oh, that’s right. Back to the doc to go to the hospital. Son got his arm tied up in that savage. Oh, really savagely broken. Yeah. Both bones like this, like,
Ryan Holmes (49:38.67)
Offset too is disgusting. Yeah, so I had to like hold things together back there while mom drove the boat back. She did a good job. Yeah. So that was her experience with that. Yeah. Let’s not do that again. Yeah. This, no, we’re not going to do that this summer. Cool. Well, anything else? Do we hit everything for you guys on your side of things? Yeah, I think so. Any other questions you guys have? I’d be happy to answer them. Just like love being a part of the community and I really appreciate you guys having me on and really appreciate, you know, getting the
